If a player is going to be out for the season, the team can get a salary cap exemption to help with replacing the player.
The exemption will be the lesser of either 50% of the players salary for this season, or $5,000,000.
To be eligible for the exemption, the player must be seriously injured (i.e. out for the season) or the NBA has approved/granted a DPE for that player.

Please let me know current rule.
Are you saying I can only get back 5 million for Durant?

Ok. Well I take the 5 million then and release Durant.
That of course effectively ends my season. I only have 12 players and around 14 million left.
It's funny to have a season preempted 2 months before it even begins.
Personally I think the rule is excessively harsh and not designed to promote a competitive league.
That probably sounds self serving but just as in the case of the Jordan issue I would oppose any rule that cripples teams or creates unfair advantages.
It is why I have pushed for and still push for 5 IL spots. 2 IL spots unfairly cripples teams that suffer too many injuries.
