I am not sure why when it comes to bidding and buying players that all teams must reduce to 16 and 2 IL before the start of the season?
If managers have been smart with their money and bought, say, 18 or even 20 players why can they not keep them all and bring them on board as injuries arise?
At some point in the season injuries will occur so what difference does it make if they bought a player during the preseason or have to buy someone during the season? Either way a player is bought and brought on board.

I think part of the strategy is to not stretch yourself too thin, so that when that happens you have salary to make proper moves in free agency. I currently have 20 players signed, only one of which will likely qualify for IL. It means that I have to prepare for the season without mortgaging my future, yet still have salary to make proper changes in FA. I like how it is currently set.

You can only keep 16 on a roster and up to 2 IL atm.

Correct - what I'm saying is I like the strategy/challenge that I have shot myself a little bit in the foot. I don't want to be able to retain all 20 for the year

Firstly, you would not retain everyone next year. I am sure you have many players on 1 year contracts?
I am not raising this because of my own situation. I currently have 18 but one is definitely injured and I can easily waive one of my 500K guys so my own predicament is not an issue.
The current system obviously frees up more players but if you buy a player now and use him later or buy a player later what difference does it make?
With the current 2 IL situation you are more likely to have to drop somebody due to injury so having a standby makes sense.
I do wish we had 5 IL.
Every dynasty league I am in has 5 IL and I am in a lot.
